Question 1

How close can the Tamron 16-50mm f2.8 A focus?

Accepted Answer

The minimum focusing distance changes with focal length, measuring 15cm at 16mm and 29cm at 50mm. At these settings, the lens provides maximum magnification ratios of 1:4.5 and 1:4.8 respectively. At the wide end, photographers can move close to foreground subjects while keeping a recognisable background within the composition. Although it offers substantial close-up framing, it is not a true 1:1 macro lens.

Question 2

Is the Tamron 16-50mm f2.8 A suitable for video recording?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The 16mm starting focal length provides a wide field of view for handheld video and vlogging, including extra framing space when electronic stabilisation crops the image. Tamron's VXD linear motor provides quiet autofocus and tracks moving subjects during recording. The constant f2.8 maximum aperture remains available when zooming towards 50mm, so the photographer can change framing without the lens imposing a smaller maximum aperture. At just 305g, the lens also places relatively little weight on compact video grips and gimbals.

Question 3

Does the Tamron 16-50mm f2.8 A lens have moisture-resistant construction?

Accepted Answer

The lens features multiple seals around the barrel to reduce moisture ingress. Its front element also has a fluorine coating that repels water and oil, making fingerprints and moisture easier to remove. These measures help when shooting outdoors in changing conditions. However, moisture resistance does not mean the lens is fully waterproof, so it should not be submerged or exposed unnecessarily to heavy rain.

Question 4

What filters does the Tamron 16-50mm f2.8 A accept?

Accepted Answer

The lens has a 55mm filter thread and accepts standard screw-in photographic filters of that diameter. A circular polariser can reduce certain reflections from glass or water, while a neutral density filter reduces incoming light for longer exposures or wider apertures in bright conditions. Using a filter with the correct thread diameter means you don't need a step-up ring. The lens also comes with a petal-shaped hood that mounts around the front element.
