Question 1

Is the Sony FE 100-400mm f4.5 GM OSS Lens compatible with teleconverters?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The lens is compatible with Sony 1.4× and 2.0× teleconverters, extending the focal range to 140–560mm and 200–800mm, respectively. When using a compatible teleconverter, the optical design maintains resolution and contrast. Autofocus and stabilisation remain largely unaffected, though performance will vary depending on the body you’re using.

Question 2

What is APS-C mode, and how does it provide extra reach?

Accepted Answer

APS-C mode applies a 1.5× crop to the centre of the full-frame sensor, narrowing the angle of view without changing the focal length. When used with the 100–400mm range, this effectively extends the framing to around 150–600mm, allowing distant subjects to fill more of the frame without moving position. On compatible Sony cameras, this mode can be assigned to the function ring, enabling instant switching between full-frame and APS-C during shooting.

Question 3

What other lenses are in Sony’s Telephoto range?

Accepted Answer

Sony’s telephoto range includes both zoom and prime lenses. Zoom options such as the 100–400mm, 200–600mm and 400–800mm provide flexible framing across longer focal lengths, while prime lenses like the 300mm f2.8, 400mm f2.8 and 600mm f4 prioritise wider apertures and faster autofocus response. This allows users to choose between flexibility in framing or maximum optical and focusing performance, depending on the subject.

Question 4

What type of photography is the Sony FE 100-400mm f4.5 GM OSS best suited to?

Accepted Answer

The 100–400mm focal range and fast autofocus system make the lens suited to wildlife, bird and sports photography, as well as photojournalism, where subjects are often distant or unpredictable. It supports tracking of small or fast-moving subjects at range, maintaining focus accuracy during high-speed action. This allows moments to be captured with consistent framing and timing, supporting one-shot reliability when movement is difficult to anticipate.

Question 5

Can I use the Sony FE 100-400mm f4.5 GM OSS Lens for video?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Four XD Linear Motors and internal focusing provide fast and quiet autofocus, supporting smooth subject tracking during recording. The lens design suppresses focus breathing and supports in-body breathing compensation on compatible cameras, helping maintain consistent framing during focus adjustments. Optical SteadyShot stabilisation supports handheld shooting, while Linear Response MF allows controlled manual focus adjustments.

Question 6

Can I use filters with the FE 100-400mm f4.5 GM OSS Lens?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The lens supports rear drop-in filters, allowing users to insert filters behind the optical system. This design avoids the need for large front filters, which can be difficult to handle at longer focal lengths. It allows users to adjust exposure and control light without affecting balance or adding bulk to the front of the lens.

Question 7

Can I mount the FE 100-400mm f4.5 GM OSS Lens to a tripod?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The lens includes a built-in tripod mount with standard 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch threads. This feature allows the lens to be mounted directly to a tripod or monopod, supporting stable positioning at longer focal lengths. The tripod collar maintains balance around the centre of gravity, reducing strain on the camera mount and allowing smoother repositioning.
