Question 1

Does the Sony ECM-W5 need an audio cable when connected to a camera?

Accepted Answer

No. When connected through a compatible Sony Multi Interface Shoe, the receiver receives power from the camera and transfers audio without a separate cable. This removes the need to connect a 3.5mm lead between the receiver and camera. The receiver also features a 3.5mm stereo output for alternative connections.

Question 2

What accessories does the Sony ECM-W5 include?

Accepted Answer

The kit includes two wind screens, two magnets, a pouch, and a charging case for storage and power. The wind screens reduce wind noise reaching the microphone, while the magnets let you attach the microphones to clothing. The kit also includes a Multi Interface Shoe adaptor, USB adaptor, and adaptor terminal protection cap.

Question 3

Can I monitor audio wirelessly while recording?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The ECM-W5 supports wireless audio monitoring through compatible Bluetooth LE Audio headphones and earbuds, allowing you to listen to the recorded sound without connecting a headphone cable directly to the receiver. It is useful when checking speech during interviews or monitoring sound while working around a camera rig. Headphones or earbuds must support the appropriate Bluetooth LE Audio connection.

Question 4

Can I connect an external microphone to the Sony ECM-W5?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Each microphone unit features a 3.5mm monaural input for connecting an external microphone. This offers an alternative to recording through the transmitter’s built-in omnidirectional microphone, especially when you want to place a separate microphone closer to the speaker. The receiver also includes a 3.5mm stereo output for connecting to compatible recording equipment.

Question 5

Can the Sony ECM-W5 record audio directly to a WAV file?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The ECM-W5 supports simultaneous recording to MP4 and a separate WAV audio file, so you can edit the audio directly without first extracting it from the video. Having a separate WAV file is useful for productions where you need to edit dialogue separately from the footage.

Question 6

Can I use the Sony ECM-W5 with a smartphone or computer?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The ECM-W5 supports connection to smartphones, tablets and computers, extending its use beyond camera recording. You can use it for flexible audio recording, creating content, or streaming directly through compatible devices.
