Sony BC-SAD1 Battery Charger for the NP-SA100

Q: Is the Sony BC-SAD1 Battery Charger smaller than the BC-ZD1?

The BC-SAD1 charger is similar in size to the BC-ZD1 but reduces overall depth and weight. At approximately 130g, it is lighter than the older 149g charger, making it easier to store alongside spare batteries, cables, and compact travel charging kits.

Q: Can the Sony Battery Charger fast-charge a single battery?

Yes. When charging a single BC-SAD1 battery, the charger reaches around 80% in approximately 55 minutes using a USB PD power supply and cable rated at 27W or higher. This makes it useful for quickly rotating a partially depleted battery back into use between shoots without waiting for a full charge cycle.

Q: Do charging speeds change when charging two batteries together?

Yes. Charging two batteries simultaneously increases the charger’s power requirement to 45W or higher. Sony quotes approximately 115 minutes for two full batteries, as the charger balances charging across both bays rather than prioritising a single pack.

Q: Can I use any USB-C power adapter with the BC-SAD1?

The BC-SAD1 draws power through USB-C rather than plugging directly into a wall socket, so charging speed depends on the USB PD power adapter connected to it. Sony recommends a 27W USB PD adapter for single-battery charging and a 45W or higher adapter for charging two batteries simultaneously. Lower-powered adapters still work, though charging times take longer.

Q: Why does Sony recommend specific USB PD wattages?

The charger adjusts its charging behaviour based on the number of batteries installed. A single battery requires lower power input, while simultaneous dual charging draws considerably more power to maintain charging speed and stability. Using the recommended USB PD ratings prevents charging slowdowns during higher-load operation.
