Sigma Hot Shoe Unit HU-21

Q: What does the Sigma Hot Shoe Unit HU-21 do?

The HU-21 adds a hot shoe connection to the Sigma FP2, which does not have a permanently fitted hot shoe. Once attached, it provides communication between the camera and compatible external flashguns or supported audio accessories. The flash connection shares specifications with OM SYSTEM and LUMIX equipment. Its detachable construction means the unit can be removed when no hot shoe accessory is required.

Q: Does the HU-21 support TTL flash photography?

Yes. With the HU-21 attached, the FP2 supports TTL automatic flash exposure with compatible flashguns. TTL metering adjusts flash output according to the camera's exposure measurement, reducing the need to set flash power manually for each shot. Manual flash, wireless flash and multi-flash functions are also supported with compatible equipment. The FP2's electronic shutter limits flash synchronisation to 1/50 second in full-frame mode or 1/60 second in crop mode.

Q: Can the HU-21 be used for external audio recording?

Yes. The HU-21 provides the connection required for supported Panasonic audio accessories, including the DMW-XLR2 and DMW-DMS1. When used with compatible equipment, the Sigma FP2 supports 32-bit float audio recording, which retains a wider range of sound levels for adjustment during editing. This is particularly useful when recording audio with sudden changes in volume. The HU-21 itself does not record audio and requires the appropriate external accessory.
