Question 1

How effective is the lens’s optical stabilisation?

Accepted Answer

OS2 provides up to 6.5 stops of optical stabilisation at 50mm and 4.5 stops at 120mm under CIPA testing with an APS-C mirrorless camera. Internal optical movement counteracts hand shake before that movement reaches the sensor, reducing visible blur during handheld shooting. This becomes particularly useful towards 120mm, where the tighter field of view magnifies small movements. Stabilisation should be switched off when the camera is fixed securely to a tripod.

Question 2

How close can the Sigma 50-120mm f2.8 lens focus?

Accepted Answer

Minimum focusing distance changes through the zoom range, measuring 23cm at 50mm and 55cm at 120mm. At 50mm, moving close to the subject produces a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:3, so smaller objects can occupy a substantial portion of the frame without a dedicated macro lens. Maximum magnification becomes 1:4.7 at 120mm, while the longer focal length gives more distance between camera and subject. This makes the zoom useful for details and small products alongside conventional telephoto subjects.

Question 3

Is the Sigma 50-120mm f2.8 suitable for video?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The optical design suppresses focus breathing, reducing framing changes when focus shifts between subjects at different distances. The HLA motor drives autofocus through a linear mechanism, giving responsive focusing as subjects move through the frame. Optical stabilisation counteracts handheld movement, while the constant f2.8 aperture means the maximum aperture doesn't get smaller as you zoom from 50mm to 120mm. These features make the lens practical when you capture stills and video with the same APS-C setup.

Question 4

What filter size does the Sigma 50-120mm f2.8 DC OS Contemporary use?

Accepted Answer

The lens has a 55mm front thread, so it accepts standard 55mm screw-in filters such as circular polarisers and neutral density filters.

Question 5

Can the Sigma 50-120mm f2.8 be used on a full-frame camera?

Accepted Answer

The lens is made for APS-C mirrorless cameras, so its image circle does not cover an entire full-frame sensor. You can still mount it on compatible full-frame mirrorless bodies, but the camera will use an APS-C crop area as needed. This means fitting the lens to a full-frame body does not provide full-frame image coverage. Any further restrictions depend on the individual camera body.
