Question 1

How does the Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG II Art Lens compare to the original?

Accepted Answer

This version is far more compact, at approximately 14% shorter and 20% lighter than its predecessor. The revised optical design also improves correction at f1.4, resulting in cleaner high-contrast detail and more consistent sharpness toward the edges. Autofocus is quicker and quieter thanks to the dual HLA motor system, which is particularly noticeable when tracking moving subjects.

Question 2

Has the lighter build compromised durability?

Accepted Answer

No. The lens combines aluminium components with Thermally Stable Composite materials, which expand at similar rates as temperatures change. This helps maintain consistent mechanical tolerances over time. In addition, key joints and control areas are sealed with a dust- and splash-resistant structure, and the front element features a water- and oil-repellent coating. Together, these design choices maintain structural integrity while reducing overall mass.

Question 3

Is the Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG II Art Lens suitable for video recording?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Dual HLA motors move the optical group quickly while keeping operational noise low, reducing the risk of focus-drive sound being picked up during recording. Focus breathing has also been suppressed to minimise changes in angle of view during refocusing, helping to maintain consistent framing during focus pulls. The aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth exposure transitions, which is particularly useful when adjusting light levels mid-shot.

Question 4

Does the Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG II Art Lens balance well on modern full-frame mirrorless bodies?

Accepted Answer

With a 73mm barrel diameter and a weight of approximately 525g, the lens feels proportionate on modern mirrorless cameras. The shorter barrel length improves centre-of-gravity placement compared to the previous generation, contributing to steadier handheld framing and more comfortable day-to-day operation.

Question 5

Can I use filters on the Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG II Art Lens?

Accepted Answer

The lens features a 67mm front filter thread, allowing the use of standard screw-in filters, such as neutral density, circular polarising, and protective filters, without adapters. Because the focusing system is internal, the front element does not rotate during operation, making it easier to use polarising and graduated ND filters without having to readjust them after focusing.
