Question 1

Does the Sigma 20-200mm f3.5-6.3 DG lens feature weather sealing?

Accepted Answer

The lens is constructed with a dust- and splash-resistant design, and the front element features a water- and oil-repellent coating. While this makes it well-suited to outdoor use, it is not fully waterproof and should not be submerged.

Question 2

How close can I focus the Sigma 20-200mm f3.5-6.3 DG Lens at different focal lengths?

Accepted Answer

The lens focuses as close as 16.5 cm at 28mm, enabling dramatic perspectives and strong subject emphasis. Across the extremes of the zoom, the minimum focusing distance ranges from 25cm at the wide end to 65cm at the tele end. Between 28–85mm, you can achieve a 1:2 reproduction ratio for detailed half-macro images without the need for accessories.

Question 3

What does ‘1:2 macro reproduction’ refer to?

Accepted Answer

A 1:2 macro ratio means the lens can reproduce subjects at half their actual size on the camera’s sensor. For instance, a 2cm object will appear as 1cm on the sensor. While a dedicated 1:1 macro lens provides life-size reproduction, a 1:2 lens still offers detailed close-ups suitable for subjects like flowers, food, and small objects, especially when paired with a minimum focusing distance of 16.5 cm.

Question 4

How does the Sigma 20-200mm f3.5-6.3 DG Lens zoom lock work in the field?

Accepted Answer

You can lock the Sigma DG Lens at the wide end to stop it extending under its own weight while walking or when packed. The lock releases via the switch or simply by twisting the zoom ring, which speeds up spontaneous shooting when a scene appears suddenly. It’s a small control that makes day-to-day use notably smoother in travel scenarios.

Question 5

What is the filter size of the Sigma 20-200mm f3.5-6.3 DG Lens?

Accepted Answer

The lens uses a φ72mm filter thread, making it compatible with a wide range of circular filters such as UV, polarising, or protective filters. Sigma also offers dedicated WR filters and protectors in this size.

Question 6

Why is the lens’s minimum aperture listed as f22-40?

Accepted Answer

As this is a variable-aperture zoom, the minimum aperture changes across the range. At the wide end, you can stop down to around f22, and towards the telephoto end, it closes further to about f40. This feature is standard for compact super-zooms, and exposure displays on the camera will update automatically as you zoom.
