Question 1

What kind of light does the Profoto PowerBeam Reflector create?

Accepted Answer

The PowerBeam Reflector creates a tight, focused beam with strong contrast and little spill. Its shape gathers light from a flat-front head and directs it forward into a 20° spread, keeping the light concentrated rather than spreading widely around the set. This makes the beam easier to aim at a subject, background detail or selected area. It is the most precise, long-throw reflector in Profoto’s flat-front reflector line.

Question 2

How does the 3.5-stop output boost work?

Accepted Answer

The PowerBeam concentrates the light into a narrow beam rather than letting it spread widely from the head. Because more of the output lands inside that 20° spread, the intensity rises by up to 3.5 stops. This gives the light more reach when it is placed further from the subject. It also helps when you want a stronger beam without letting light spill across the rest of the scene.

Question 3

Why is the PowerBeam useful for long-throw lighting?

Accepted Answer

Long-throw lighting needs a beam that stays narrow as it travels. The PowerBeam’s 20° spread keeps the light more focused, so it can sit further away while still putting enough light on the subject. This is useful on larger sets or when the light has to be placed outside the frame. The narrower beam also keeps nearby areas darker than they would be with a wider reflector.

Question 4

Why is the PowerBeam Reflector optimised for flat-front lights?

Accepted Answer

Flat-front lights emit differently from protruding flash heads, so the reflector needs to gather light from a flatter source. The PowerBeam is shaped for that, creating a single continuous light source rather than splitting the output into separate light stamps. Two light stamps can produce double shadows, which are harder to place cleanly. With the PowerBeam on a flat-front light, the beam and shadow edge are easier to control.

Question 5

Can I shape the PowerBeam further with accessories?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The PowerBeam Reflector is compatible with Profoto 337mm grids and barndoors. A grid reduces the angle of light leaving the reflector, so the beam becomes tighter with less spill. Barndoors physically cut light from the sides of the beam, which is useful when you need to keep light off a wall, floor or part of the subject. These accessories give more control when the 20° beam still needs a cleaner edge.
