Question 1

What is a LUMIX S series lens?

Accepted Answer

A LUMIX S series lens is a full-frame L-Mount lens designed for LUMIX S cameras, with full sensor coverage and direct electronic communication with the body. Across the range, these lenses follow a consistent design approach, including dust- and splash-resistant construction, controlled focus behaviour, and video-oriented features such as reduced focus breathing and smoother aperture transitions. In use, this means handling and output stay consistent when switching between lenses in the system.

Question 2

Can I attach filters and accessories to the Panasonic LUMIX S 40mm f2 Lens?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The lens uses a 62mm filter thread, which is already standard across several compact LUMIX S lenses, including the LUMIX S 18–40mm. If you are already using the system, there is a good chance you will have compatible filters that can be shared across lenses. Alternatively, if you are starting out, 62mm filters are widely available and can be attached directly without the need for step-up rings.

Question 3

Does the Panasonic LUMIX S 40mm f2 Lens have a circular aperture?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The lens uses a 7-blade circular aperture diaphragm, which keeps the aperture shape rounded as you stop down. In practice, that means background blur stays smooth, and highlights don’t take on a more angular shape. It helps keep the overall look more natural, especially when shooting at wider apertures or closer distances.

Question 4

What types of photography is the Panasonic LUMIX S 40mm f2 Lens for?

Accepted Answer

The 40mm focal length is designed to be flexible rather than specialised. It sits between 35mm and 50mm, so you’re not dealing with strong wide-angle distortion or tight framing. That makes it well-suited to everyday photography, including street, portrait, and travel photography, where you want one lens that can adapt.

Question 5

How compact is the Panasonic LUMIX S 40mm f2 Lens?

Accepted Answer

It’s very small for a full-frame lens, at around 40.9mm long and 144g. That makes a noticeable difference when you’re carrying it all day. On a body like the LUMIX S9, it keeps the setup compact and well balanced, so it doesn’t feel front-heavy.

Question 6

Is the Panasonic LUMIX S 40mm f2 Lens suitable for video?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The lens follows the same video-focused design as the rest of the LUMIX S range. Focus breathing suppression keeps framing stable when adjusting focus, so the image does not shift during focus pulls. Micro-step aperture control also smooths exposure changes. This combination of features ensures focus and exposure adjustments remain visually consistent during recording.

Question 7

Can I use the Panasonic LUMIX S 40mm f2 Lens outdoors?

Accepted Answer

The lens is dust- and splash-resistant, and maintains consistent performance down to -10°C. That means it can handle typical outdoor conditions, such as light rain, dust, and colder weather. It’s not fully waterproof, but it’s built for frequent outdoor use.
