What’s new?

The Nikon Z5IIC strips the Z5 II back to what matters most for creators, retaining much of its imaging capability but removing the viewfinder to cut size and weight. At 538g and just 80.5mm tall, it puts full-frame performance into a considerably more portable body, with the 3.2-inch vari-angle touchscreen taking over composition and control. The simplified design philosophy extends beyond the body, with 15 Scene modes that automatically select settings for different subjects and scenes. Subject detection also expands to 10 types, adding fish detection and recognising subjects occupying as little as 3% of the frame.

Nikon also makes it easier to establish your own visual style in-camera, with downloadable Image Recipes from Nikon and RED on the Nikon Imaging Cloud. By combining much of the Z5 II’s imaging capability with a smaller body and more accessible controls, the Z5IIC creates a new entry point into Nikon’s full-frame system, lowering the learning curve for photographers and content creators taking the next step. Accessible when you need support and capable when you want more control, the Z5IIC has the imaging performance to take users well beyond the features that helped them get started.

24.5MP full-frame sensor and EXPEED 7

The Nikon Z5IIC pairs a 24.5MP FX full-frame sensor with the EXPEED 7 image processor, delivering wide dynamic range with strong highlight and shadow detail and rich tonal gradations. Intelligent noise reduction works alongside the sensor to preserve texture and fine detail as sensitivity increases, with a standard ISO range of 100 to 64,000 for photography and 100 to 51,200 for video. Images can be recorded in RAW, JPEG or HEIF, giving photographers a choice between greater editing flexibility and more immediately usable files. Shutter speeds range from 1/8000s to 30 seconds, with long exposure options up to 900 seconds.

For faster subjects, the Z5IIC shoots at up to 14fps in Continuous High Extended mode, increasing to 30fps with the electronic shutter in C30. The faster C30 mode also lets photographers select a preferred frame or keep the full sequence. This gives the Z5IIC the speed to move beyond its entry-level positioning as photographers explore wildlife, sports, and other moving subjects.

Intelligent subject detection autofocus

Despite the Z5IIC’s more accessible positioning, Nikon has retained a broad subject-detection system that can recognise 10 different subject types. Phase-detection autofocus can identify people, birds, dogs, cats, cars, bicycles, motorcycles, trains, aeroplanes and fish, with fish detection now extending automatic recognition to aquatic subjects. The system can also recognise subjects occupying as little as 3% of the frame, helping autofocus pick up smaller subjects within a wider composition. Sensitivity extends down to -10 EV, allowing autofocus to continue operating in near-dark conditions where available light is limited.

The autofocus system uses 273 points in Single-point AF and 299 points in Auto-area AF, giving photographers control over whether they select focus placement manually or let the camera manage it across a wider area of the frame. Product Review Mode offers a more specific option for content creation, automatically shifting focus to an object as it moves towards the camera. This removes the need to manually change focus between the presenter and product during demonstrations or reviews.

5-axis in-body stabilisation

The Z5IIC uses 5-axis in-body image stabilisation to provide up to 7.5 stops of compensation at the centre of the frame and up to 6 stops towards the edge. By compensating for camera movement at the sensor, the system lets you use slower shutter speeds handheld before camera shake becomes visible. This is particularly useful in low light or when a tripod would limit the camera's portability. Focus Point VR concentrates stabilisation around the active focus point rather than treating the centre of the frame as the only priority. This helps maintain stability when the subject is positioned away from the centre, giving photographers greater freedom to compose without losing the benefit of the camera’s stabilisation system.

4K 60p, N-RAW and slow motion

For users who want more control over how their footage is finished, the Z5IIC records N-RAW internally alongside 4K 30p and cropped 4K 60p. N-RAW retains more image data for editing, while N-Log records a flatter image with more flexibility to shape colour and tone during grading. HLG is also available for HDR recording, alongside SDR for standard dynamic range output. For slow motion, Full HD recording extends to 120p and can produce 5x slow-motion footage directly in-camera. Hi-Res Zoom provides up to 2x digital zoom without reducing output resolution, letting you tighten the frame during recording without changing lenses.

Scene modes and in-camera colour

New to the Z5IIC, 15 Scene modes give photographers more control over automatic shooting by tailoring the camera settings to a select subject or scene. Options include pets, food, sunsets and neon-lit night scenes, letting you tell the camera what you are photographing rather than relying on Auto to make that distinction. Nikon Imaging Cloud also expands the creative options with downloadable Image Recipes from Nikon and RED. Recipes apply different colour palettes and styles in-camera, from vintage treatments to stronger colour-led looks, giving users greater control over their images without creating the style from scratch. Nikon Film Grain can be applied alongside an Image Recipe, adding an analogue film-style grain effect to photos or video.

Portable, screen-led design

By introducing a screen-led design philosophy and removing the viewfinder, Nikon has made the Z5IIC 82g lighter and 20mm shorter than the Z5 II. Its lightweight 538g magnesium alloy body retains dust and moisture sealing, with a shaped grip that provides a secure hold and supports stable one-handed operation. The 3.2-inch 1040k-dot vari-angle touchscreen becomes central to the camera’s operation, providing composition, touch control and playback from a single display. It can be positioned for high- or low-angle shooting or turned forwards for self-recording, giving content creators a clear view of the frame when working in front of the camera.

Wireless connectivity

Connectivity follows the Z5IIC’s emphasis on keeping the process between shooting and sharing relatively simple. Built-in 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connect to Nikon SnapBridge, letting photographers transfer images wirelessly to a smartphone without removing the SD card. Nikon Imaging Cloud extends that connection beyond image transfer, with automatic uploads over Wi-Fi, firmware updates delivered directly to the camera and access to downloadable Image Recipes.

Nikon Z 24-50mm f4-6.3 Lens

This versatile lens is one of the smallest and lightest full-frame zoom lenses on the market. It packs a punch, giving you the opportunity to play with perspective at the wide 24mm end and capture striking portraits at the 50mm end. The lens has a retractable zoom and is constructed from 11 glass elements in 10 groups (with 2 ED glass lenses and 3 aspherical lenses). These elements help to produce bright and vivid colour images. The autofocus system sharp, fast and silent, and focus breathing has been optimised and reduced when filming. This lens gives the scope to experiment with full-frame photography and if you're already used to full-frame, this lens is going to be a treat to use as well!

FAQs:

Is the Nikon Z5IIC compatible with the Nikon MC-DC3?

Yes. The Nikon Z5IIC is compatible with the Nikon MC-DC3 remote cord. This lets you trigger the shutter without pressing the shutter-release button directly on the camera. It's useful when you want to avoid introducing movement to the camera during an exposure.

What memory cards does the Nikon Z5IIC use?

The Nikon Z5IIC records to a single SD card and supports UHS-II cards. Faster UHS-II media is especially useful for continuous bursts or data-heavy video formats, where the camera needs to write large amounts of data to the card.

How compact is the Nikon Z5IIC?

The Nikon Z5IIC measures approximately 134 x 80.5 x 72mm and weighs approximately 538g (body only) and 620g (with battery and memory card but without body cap and accessory shoe cover). That makes it 20mm shorter and 82g lighter than the Z5 II, giving you much of the same full-frame imaging capability in a noticeably smaller body. The viewfinder-free, screen-led design accounts for much of that reduction.

What is the extended ISO range of the Nikon Z5IIC?

For photography, the standard sensitivity range is ISO 100 to 64,000, with Lo 1.0 and Hi 1.7 extension settings available. Video uses a standard range of ISO 100 to 51,200 with extension up to Hi 2.0. These extended settings provide sensitivity options beyond the camera’s standard ISO ranges when required

Is the Nikon Z5IIC compatible with external displays?

Yes. The Nikon Z5IIC includes an HDMI Type D connection for output to an external display. This lets you view the camera’s output on a separate compatible display instead of relying solely on the 3.2-inch vari-angle touchscreen. The camera also includes separate microphone and headphone connections for external audio recording and monitoring.

What lenses are compatible with the Nikon Z5IIC?

The Nikon Z5IIC is compatible with all Nikon Z-mount lenses, so there is plenty of scope to add different focal lengths as your photography develops. To get started, the camera is also available with three of Nikon’s familiar kit zooms:

Each bundle pairs the Z5IIC body with a lens from the outset, with the wider NIKKOR Z system available when you want to expand beyond your first zoom.
