Question 1

Which cameras are compatible with the Leica APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100 f2.8 lens?

Accepted Answer

The lens uses the Leica L bayonet with an electronic contact strip for communication between lens and camera. It is primarily designed for the Leica SL-System, where compatible camera bodies, such as the Leica SL3, SL3-S and SL3-P, can control aperture, focus mode and lens data through the interface. Firmware updates can also be installed through the camera. As an L-Mount lens, it may also mount to compatible L-Mount bodies, but camera-specific support should be checked before use.

Question 2

What is the minimum focus distance of the Leica APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100 f2.8 lens?

Accepted Answer

The lens focuses from 0.29m to infinity. At its closest working range, it delivers practical 1:1 macro reproduction, with a largest scale of 1:0.997. This scale allows small subjects to fill the frame on a full-frame SL camera. At close distances, the effective aperture is reduced as magnification increases, so exposure should be managed when working near life-size.

Question 3

Can the Leica APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100 f2.8 be used for portrait photography?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The 100mm focal length gives a narrow full-frame angle of view, which suits tighter portrait framing and subject isolation. The f2.8 aperture gives control over depth of field, while the nine-blade aperture supports smooth background rendering. Apochromatic correction helps reduce colour fringing around high-contrast edges such as hair, fabric and reflective details. The lens remains a macro design first and foremost, but its focal length and rendering make it useful for portrait work.

Question 4

Does the Leica APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100 f2.8 accept filters?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The lens has an E67 filter thread for compatible 67mm screw-in filters. Protective filters can help shield the front element, while neutral density filters allow wider apertures or slower shutter speeds in bright light. Polarising filters can help control reflections on glass, foliage or product surfaces. The supplied lens hood mounts by bayonet to help shield the front element from stray light.

Question 5

Is the Leica APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100 f2.8 weatherproof?

Accepted Answer

The lens uses an aluminium full-metal housing with dust and splash protection. AquaDura coating on the external glass helps repel water, oil and dirt, making the front surface easier to keep clean. It should not be treated as waterproof.

Question 6

What are the dimensions of the Leica APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100 f2.8?

Accepted Answer

The lens measures approximately 137mm long without the hood and 187mm with the hood attached. Its diameter is approximately 77mm without the hood / 82mm with the hood. The weight is approximately 801g without the hood, or 862g with. This gives the lens a solid, robust structure while keeping it practical for handheld short-telephoto use and controlled macro setups.
