Question 1

How quickly does the Canon Speedlite EL-5 II recycle between flashes?

Accepted Answer

Recycle times range from 0.1 to 1.2 seconds, depending on the flash output. During continuous shooting, the short recycle interval restores the flash quickly between frames, reducing the likelihood of missing a moment while waiting for the unit to recharge. The EL-5 II delivers about 854 full-power flashes in a continuous burst. An improved internal airflow system also moves heat away from the flash head during repeated firing.

Question 2

How much control does the EL-5 II provide over flash power?

Accepted Answer

Manual output can be adjusted from full power down to 1/1024 power, providing fine control when only a small amount of additional light is required. Reducing the output changes the amount of light the flash emits, making it possible to balance the flash contribution against the existing exposure with greater precision. FE Memory can retain flash exposure settings for faster manual setup, while Custom Flash Modes store frequently used configurations. On compatible cameras, these flash modes can also link with the camera’s own Custom settings.

Question 3

Can the EL-5 II control other Speedlites wirelessly?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The built-in radio transmitter can control up to 15 Speedlites from distances of up to 50 metres. Positioning flashes away from the camera changes the direction from which light reaches the subject, making it possible to establish separate key, fill or background lighting rather than relying on a single frontal source. Radio control removes the need for a physical connection between the individual flash units. The Dual White LED also provides five brightness levels for assessing the lighting before exposure.

Question 4

Can I adjust the Canon Speedlite EL-5 II from the camera?

Accepted Answer

Yes, when the flash is connected to a compatible camera through Canon’s Multi-Function Foot interface. The connection provides direct communication between the camera and the Speedlite, so you can adjust flash settings without relying solely on the flash's controls. Pressing the Speedlite Direct Menu button lets you access flash settings through the camera LCD, while the joystick remains available for adjustment directly on the unit. You can also control it remotely through the Camera Connect App.

Question 5

Can the EL-5 II bounce flash from walls or ceilings?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The flash head tilts up to 120° and can also turn sideways, so you can direct the light toward a nearby ceiling or wall rather than straight at the subject. The flash then reflects off the larger surface before reaching the scene, changing the light's direction and spreading it across a broader area. This produces a different lighting pattern from direct on-camera flash and can reduce hard frontal shadows. The head movement also makes it possible to maintain the required bounce direction when changing camera position.

Question 6

What battery does the Canon Speedlite EL-5 II use?

Accepted Answer

The EL-5 II uses Canon’s rechargeable LP-EL Li-ion battery, which provides approximately 350 flashes at full power. A battery level indicator displays the remaining charge, making it easier to assess when the battery needs replacing or recharging. The Li-ion battery also supplies the power required for the flash’s 0.1 to 1.2-second recycling. Actual battery endurance will vary according to the flash output used.
