Question 1

How does the power zoom system operate during recording?

Accepted Answer

The internal power zoom uses an electronically controlled servo mechanism rather than a mechanically linked zoom ring. Because zoom speed is motor-controlled, movement remains smooth and consistent throughout the transition, avoiding uneven acceleration or abrupt framing changes. Users can control zoom directly through the lens, via the zoom levers on compatible EOS cameras, Bluetooth remotes, or Canon Camera Connect. The system also allows instant switching between servo zoom and manual zoom operation without changing the physical handling of the lens.

Question 2

Does the lens have a fixed aperture?

Accepted Answer

The aperture remains fixed at f4 across the entire 20-50mm range, so the amount of light passing through the lens does not change as you zoom. This behaviour is particularly useful during video recording, where changing aperture values can introduce visible brightness shifts mid-shot. The constant aperture also provides more predictable depth of field control across the zoom range.

Question 3

What is the benefit of internal zoom?

Accepted Answer

The RF 20-50mm f4L IS USM PZ maintains a fixed physical length throughout the zoom range. Because the lens does not extend forward during zoom operation, the centre of gravity remains more consistent, improving balance during handheld shooting and gimbal operation. This stable handling behaviour also reduces the need to rebalance lightweight rigs after changing focal length, helping maintain smoother operation during movement.

Question 4

How does the stabilisation work alongside a camera with IBIS?

Accepted Answer

The lens provides up to 6 stops of optical image stabilisation using internal correction elements that compensate for handheld movement. When mounted on compatible Canon cameras with in-body image stabilisation, coordinated control between the lens and camera can increase up to 8 stops. Together, the systems reduce visible shake during slower shutter speeds, handheld walking shots, and framing adjustments, helping maintain steadier results without external support equipment.

Question 5

Can this lens be used for close-up subjects?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The minimum focusing distance is 24cm, allowing users to position the lens close to subjects for tighter framing. At its maximum 0.33x magnification, subjects are reproduced at near macro scale, making the lens suitable for product details, small objects, food photography, and close environmental compositions. The wider 20mm focal length also allows users to retain more surrounding context while working close to subjects.

Question 6

What cameras are compatible with this lens?

Accepted Answer

The RF 20-50mm f4L IS USM PZ is compatible with Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras, including full-frame EOS R models and some Cinema EOS cameras. Features such as coordinated stabilisation, remote zoom control, and camera-based zoom levers depend on camera compatibility. The lens is particularly suited to hybrid-focused bodies such as the Canon EOS C50, EOS R6 Mark III and Canon EOS R6 V, where the internal power zoom and stabilisation systems integrate directly with video-focused controls.
