Question 1

Can I record with this shotgun microphone and a lavalier microphone at the same time?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The ATV-SG1 includes an external input jack that accepts either a plug-in-powered wired lavalier microphone or a wireless lavalier receiver, allowing you to capture the focused sound from the shotgun microphone while also capturing a second microphone source. It is particularly useful for interviews and presentations where you want both ambient pickup and close-miked dialogue available during editing.

Question 2

How does the safety track function work?

Accepted Answer

The safety track records two mono channels simultaneously. Your chosen recording level is sent to the left channel, while the right channel records the same signal at 6 dB lower. If sudden volume spikes overload the primary recording, the quieter backup track often remains free from clipping and can be used instead.

Question 3

Can I monitor audio while recording?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A built-in headphone output with adjustable volume allows real-time monitoring directly from the microphone. Listening during recording helps identify issues such as background noise, clothing rustle, or incorrect gain settings before they become problems in post-production. It provides reassurance when working without a dedicated sound operator.

Question 4

How long does the battery last?

Accepted Answer

The built-in USB rechargeable battery provides approximately 24 hours of continuous operation on a full charge. This extended runtime comfortably covers full shooting days, interviews, and multi-location productions without frequent recharging. The microphone also powers on and off automatically with the camera to conserve battery life between takes.

Question 5

Is the ATV-SG1 suitable for outdoor recording?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The supplied wind muff adds another layer of protection against wind interference when filming outside. When combined with the low-cut filter, it reduces low-frequency noise from gusts, passing traffic, and other environmental sources. These features help maintain clearer recordings in changing outdoor conditions.
