Atomos Ninja RAW

Q: Does the Ninja RAW record internally, or only to external media?

The Ninja RAW records externally to CFexpress Type B cards or compatible USB-C storage. It does not rely on the camera’s internal card slots for recording. This allows you to capture higher-quality ProRes and ProRes RAW files directly from the HDMI output. Media choice depends on your workflow and required data rates.

Q: Which codecs does the Ninja RAW support?

The Atomos Ninja RAW supports ProRes RAW, ProRes RAW HQ, ProRes LT, ProRes 422, and ProRes 422 HQ, as well as Avid DNx and H.265 recording. These codecs give you flexibility depending on whether you prioritise grading latitude, manageable file sizes or broadcast delivery formats. Leading NLEs widely recognise all supported codecs.

Q: Can I control my camera from the Ninja RAW?

Yes, for supported models. Via USB-C, you can control start and stop, ISO, shutter speed, aperture and white balance, and use touch-to-focus directly from the screen. This is particularly useful when your camera is mounted high, on a gimbal, or inside a tight rig.

Q: Is the screen bright enough for outdoor use?

At 1500 nits, the display remains visible in bright daylight. In real-world use, that means you can judge exposure and focus outdoors without immediately reaching for a hood. Combined with the waveform and EL Zone, it gives you a more reliable reference than most built-in camera screens.

Q: How is the monitor powered?

The Ninja RAW supports NP-F batteries, USB-C power banks and DC input. That flexibility makes it straightforward to match your power setup to the rest of your rig. For longer studio sessions, DC power is practical, while USB-C banks or NP-F batteries suit handheld and travel setups.
